Smoking: what are the effects?

Effects of tobacco

The effects of any drug (including tobacco) vary from person to person. How tobacco affects a person depends on many things including their size, weight and health, also whether the person is used to taking it. The effects of tobacco, as with any drug, also depend on the amount taken.
In Australia, tobacco use is responsible for approximately 15,000 deaths each year. In 2004–2005 approximately three-quarters of a million hospital bed-days were a result of tobacco use. (Collins & Lapsley, 2008)
There is no safe level of tobacco use. Use of any drug always carries some risk—even medications can produce unwanted side effects. It is important to be careful when taking any type of drug.

Immediate effects

Low to moderate doses

Some of the effects that may be experienced after smoking tobacco include:
  • initial stimulation, then reduction in activity of brain and nervous system
  • increased alertness and concentration
  • feelings of mild euphoria
  • feelings of relaxation
  • increased blood pressure and heart rate
  • decreased blood flow to fingers and toes
  • decreased skin temperature
  • bad breath
  • decreased appetite
  • dizziness
  • nausea, abdominal cramps and vomiting
  • headache
  • coughing, due to smoke irritation.

Higher doses

A high dose of nicotine can cause a person to overdose. This means that a person has taken more nicotine than their body can cope with. The effects of very large doses can include:
  • an increase in the unpleasant effects
  • feeling faint
  • confusion
  • rapid decrease in blood pressure and breathing rate
  • seizures
  • respiratory arrest (stopping breathing) and death.
60 mg of nicotine taken orally can be fatal for an adult.

Long-term effects

Tar in cigarettes coats the lungs and can cause lung and throat cancer in smokers. It is also responsible for the yellow–brown staining on smokers’ fingers and teeth.
Carbon monoxide in cigarettes reduces the amount of oxygen available to the muscles, brain and blood. This means the whole body—especially the heart—must work harder. Over time this causes airways to narrow and blood pressure to rise, which can lead to heart attack and stroke.
High levels of CO, together with nicotine, increase the risk of heart disease, hardening of the arteries and other circulatory problems.
Some of the long-term effects of smoking (Quit Victoria, 2010) that may be experienced include:
  • increased risk of stroke and brain damage
  • eye cataracts, macular degeneration, yellowing of whites of eyes
  • loss of sense of smell and taste
  • yellow teeth, tooth decay and bad breath
  • cancer of the nose, lip, tongue and mouth
  • possible hearing loss
  • laryngeal and pharyngeal cancers
  • contributes to osteoporosis
  • shortness of breath
  • coughing
  • chronic bronchitis
  • cancer
  • triggering asthma
  • emphysema
  • heart disease
  • blockages in blood supply that can lead to a heart attack
  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • myeloid leukaemia, a cancer that affects bone marrow and organs that make blood
  • stomach and bladder cancers
  • stomach ulcers
  • decreased appetite
  • grey appearance
  • early wrinkles
  • slower healing wounds
  • damage to blood vessel walls
  • increased likelihood of back pain
  • increased susceptibility to infection
  • lower fertility and increased risk of miscarriage
  • irregular periods
  • early menopause
  • damaged sperm and reduced sperm
  • impotence.

Other effects of tobacco use

Passive smoking

Passive smoking occurs when a person who is not smoking breathes in the smoke from people who are smoking. Passive smoking can irritate the eyes and nose and cause a number of health problems such as heart disease and lung cancer. Tobacco smoke is especially harmful to babies and young children.

Using tobacco with other drugs

Nicotine can affect the way the body processes many different drugs. This can affect how these drugs work. For example, nicotine can decrease the effectiveness of benzodiazepines. Smoking while taking the contraceptive pill increases the risk of blood clots forming.
Check with your doctor or other health professional whether nicotine might affect any medications you are taking.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Read about the effects of tobacco use on pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Many drugs can cross the placenta and affect an unborn child.
In general, using drugs when pregnant can increase the chances of going into labour early. This can mean that babies are born below the normal birth weight.
If a mother uses drugs while breastfeeding, they may be present in her milk, and could affect the baby.
Check with your health professional if you are taking or planning to take any drugs during pregnancy, or while breastfeeding.

Tolerance and dependence

People who use tobacco regularly tend to develop a tolerance to the effects of nicotine. This means they need to smoke more tobacco to get the same effect.
They may become dependent on nicotine. Dependence can be psychological, physical, or both. People who are dependent on nicotine find that using the drug becomes far more important than other activities in their life. They crave the drug and will find it very difficult to stop using it.
People who are psychologically dependent on nicotine may find they feel an urge to smoke when they are in specific surroundings or socialising with friends.
Physical dependence occurs when a person’s body adapts to the nicotine and gets used to functioning with the nicotine present.

Effect too long in front of computer

6 Ways Sitting in Front of Your Computer All Day is Killing You (And What to Do About It)

Sitting is so much a part of our modern lifestyles that we often don’t realize how inactive we’ve become. For those of us who work online or in a work-at-home setting, sitting at a computer for hours on end working seems natural to our way of life. Add all the time you spend on the couch watching TV and in the car driving, and odds are you’re probably leading a sedentary lifestyle without even knowing it. And sitting for long periods of time is really, really bad for you.
Several studies show prolonged sitting ranks second after smoking as the world’s top risk factor for non-communicable diseases. Smoking edges out inactivity with 5.3 million deaths per year compared to 5 million deaths per year due to inactivity. "We just aren't really structured to be sitting for such long periods of time, and when we do that, our body just kind of goes into shutdown," observed Dr. Antronette Yancey (late UCLA public health professor) author of the book Instant Recess: Building a Fit Nation 10 Minutes at a Time.
Dr. Yancey had spent years working on developing programs to motivate people to get up and move. She emphasized the importance of healthy living through physical fitness and thought whoever invented sitting probably didn't have our best interests at heart. That's because sitting too much is dangerous. Here are six ways sitting is slowly killing you and you may not even notice it.

1.   Sitting all day causes body aches.

You don’t need an expert to tell you that sitting in front of the computer all day can give you body aches and pains, including a sore back and headache. Worse still, staring at the computer screen for prolonged spells of time leaves you prone to dry eyes. Dry eyes can lead to lower resolution of vision, severe damage to the eye ball and bad eye sight. But you already knew that, right?

2.   Sitting all day makes you fatter.

One report reveals that when we sit all day, “electrical activity in the muscles drops…leading to a cascade of harmful metabolic effects” that can cause you to gain weight. In other words, being a couch potato makes you fatter—no surprise there. What is surprising, though, is that even if you hit the gym or the jogging path daily, sitting all day is still bad for you. Working out is not a panacea—it cannot counteract hours of being sedentary.

3.   Sitting all day makes you dumber.

Another study conducted by German scientist Sabine Schaefer from the Max Plank Institute for Human Development reinforced anecdotal evidence that suggests sitting for long periods of time is not only bad for your body, but also for your mind. The study found that walking increases your resources of energy, which you can then invest in thinking and improve your working memory performance. Turns out the reverse also holds true. If you sit all day, it can lower your resources of energy, slow down your working memory performance and actually make you dumber. It’s a clear case of mental performance being superior when you are actually physically active.

4.   Sitting all day attracts chronic illnesses.

Prolonged sitting can also trigger unhealthy metabolic changes that lead to a myriad of chronic illnesses, including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, stroke, kidney stones and certain types of cancer. In fact, the statistics show for every two hours spent sitting in front of the computer or television you raise your risk of lung cancer by 6%, of colon cancer by 8% and of endometrial cancer by 10%. Your risk of heart disease increases by up to 64% and you are 18% more likely to die from diabetes when you sit for more than 11 hours per day.

5.   Sitting all day triggers mood disorders.

You might think sitting in front of your computer the whole day makes you more productive, but in reality it lowers your productivity. That is because sitting for long hours per day causes fatigue and can trigger mood disorders like stress and depression. Evidently, a great deal of sitting not only messes up your physical and mental well-being, but also your emotional stability.

6.   Sitting all day lowers life expectancy.

Researchers Van der Ploeg and colleagues found that sitting too much increases risk of death by 40% regardless of any other activities one does. You shave off seven years of quality life just by sitting for 11 or more hours per day. Moreover, people who sit too long are more likely to die in the next three years than those who don't sit as long. This science-backed information should shock and convince all of us to change our lifestyles and combat the deadly "sitting disease."

Benefit of smiling

Laughing that You Didn't Know about

Smiling and laughing can have a positive effect on your well-being, but as you make the transition from child to adult, you often tend to lose the habit of indulging in these behaviors. A good example of this is a children’s playground: You often see the kids running around, constantly laughing and smiling as they enjoy living in the moment, while the parents sit around the edge, full of the stresses that modern life can bring, with the occasional grin breaking their otherwise serious facial expressions. Adults can benefit from taking a lead from children and making more room in life for smiling and laughter.
Research has shown that there a number of health benefits contributed to smiling and laughing. In addition to improved health, these simple facial expressions and common human behaviors can have a distinctive positive affect on other factors all areas of your life. When you smile and laugh, a number of physiological changes occur in your body, mostly without you being consciously aware of it happening.

7 Benefits of Smiling and Laughing

1. Neurotransmitters called endorphins are released when you smile.

These are triggered by the movements of the muscles in your face, which is interpreted by your brain, which in turn releases these chemicals. Endorphins are responsible for making us feel happy, and they also help lower stress levels. Faking a smile or laugh works as well as the real thing—the brain doesn’t differentiate between real or fake as it interprets the positioning of the facial muscles in the same way. This is known as the facial feedback hypothesis. The more we stimulate our brain to release this chemical the more often we feel happier and relaxed.

2. Endorphins make us feel happier and less stressed.

They also act as the body’s natural pain killers. For sufferers of chronic pain, laughing and smiling can be very effective in pain management, as can laughing off the pain when you bump an elbow or fall over.

3. While the release of endorphins is increased, the stress hormone cortisol is reduced.

Cortisol is more active when we feel stressed or anxious and contributes to the unpleasant feelings we experience, and by lowering it we can reduce these negative feelings.

4. Laughing expands the lungs, stretches the muscles in the body and stimulates homeostasis.

This exercises the body, replenishing the cells from a lungful of oxygen and gaining all the benefits of exercising the body.

5. A good laugh can be an effective way to release emotions.

A good laugh can help you release emotions, especially those emotions that you might bottle up inside. Everything looks that little bit better after a good laugh and life can be seen from a more positive perspective. Smiling and laughing have positive social implications as well.

6. Smiling is an attractive expression, which is more likely to draw people to you rather than push them away.

Smiling makes you appear more approachable. Interaction with others is easier and more enjoyable when smiles and laughs are shared, and these behaviours are contagious, making others feel better too, and make you a more appealing and attractive person to be around. This in turn will have a positive effect on your well-being.

7. A happy, positive expression will serve you well in life.

This is particularly  true for challenging situations such as job interviews: a smiling, relaxed persona indicates confidence and an ability to cope well in stressful situations. This will also be of benefit in your career, building healthy relationships with colleagues and being seen in a favourable light by your employers.

lets watching the movies

Top 10 Benefits of Watching Movies

The benefits of watching movies are immense. Sitting in a theater with your friends munching on popcorns and sipping your favourite smoothie you watch your favourite actors battle aliens in a larger than life frame. You feel excited, scared, emotional and happy during those two and a half hours; you are transferred to a world away from reality and you enjoy every moment of it. As you walk out of the theater doors, you feel rejuvenated, de-stressed and realize that you had, even for a few hours at least, forgotten about the troubles of day to day life. I read somewhere that certain therapists have actually prescribed films to help patients overcome obstacles like depression or a slump in their emotional well being. So what are the ways in which they benefit us? Read along to find out!

10. Awareness:

There are movies made on social issues which are very much pertinent to our society. Movies on matters such as dowry, caste system, honour killing and socio economic divide often help create the needed awareness about the issues. They arouse the long gone conscience in people when they see individuals going through such difficult situations even if it is on screen. So yes, movies help and work in delivering important messages to the society.

9. Best Hangout for Couples:

Perhaps you held your girlfriend’s hand in public when you went to see a movie with her. Perhaps it was also the first time you kissed her; it all happens in the movie hall for so many couples. It is the place where you are not judged for going out together; or you are not looked at with skepticism more so in places like India.  If it weren’t for movies; we wouldn’t have the theaters which are hangout havens; if I may say so; for the younger generation in love.

8. Thrilling experience:

So you are in dire need for some excitement or thrill but your boss isn’t sanctioning that long overdue leave of yours. It has been ages since you have gone to the outdoors. What do you do? Do you wait for the ever evading holidays to have an exhilarating experience or do you do something about it? There are ample movies to take you through spine-tingling excitement till you actually find time for some actual outdoor escapade. Yes movies offer you an avenue for this too!

7. Good laugh and bonding:

Do you remember the last time you laughed your heart out while watching a movie? I do and I also recall it was among some of the very rare moments when I actually had a good uninhibited laugh. Well that’s what a good comedy does to you. It is as much a way to lighten the mood as it is a way to bond. I can never forget the night outs in hostels where the girls and I watched back to back comedy films, laughed together and, for some weird reason, grew closer as friends and companions.

6. Inspiration:

One of the prime benefits of watching movies is that it inspires you. Biopic and movies on historical figures often give you a glimpse into the simple truths of life. You get to see through your own eyes the transformation of ordinary men and women into heroes in times of needs and somewhere it motivates you to look at life in a different perspective. Yes, you realize a regular people like you and I too are capable of great things in life.

5. Get over a break up:

It may sound clichéd though but hey, it isn’t clichéd for nothing! It has been proven time and again that watching your favourite romantic movies with your favourite ice-cream or wine is a great way to get over your broken heart. You must have seen such scenes over and over again in movies and you know it’s indeed true! The movie takes your mind off him, you sob in the beginning but gradually the movie is able to heal you and you are ready for another shot at love.

4. Time pass:

Imagine you are home all alone with nothing to do. Chatting on phone or Facebook could be an ooption but there is a limit to it. What do you do then with no friends around and hardly any place to go? Simple – watch a movie. Watching movie is indeed a great passtime. You have the company of some of the funniest, dangerous and beautiful people in the world acting out interesting plots for you. What more could you ask for?

3. Cinetherapy:

It is an interesting approach to treating patients with depression, mood disorders and the likes. They say a picture speaks a thousand words. So imagine what a movie which is an amalgamation of thousands of pictures along with dialogues and music can do for such a person? It is still at a very nascent stage and virtually uncommon but nevertheless it is a great source of calming the inner turmoil one might be going through and thus an adept therapy tool.

2. Stress Buster:

Among the foremost benefits of watching movies, one has to be its role as a stress buster. You don’t need a shrink to tell you to go watch your favourite movies or the latest releases. You know it as well as anybody else what a good movie outing with friends or just one in the comforts of your home can prove to be. Whatever the genre, as long as you enjoy it a movie elevates your senses and refreshes you for a fresh dose of reality.

1. Entertainment:

Hands down, entertainment is the principal reason for the entire world watching movies. Be it comedy, drama, sci-fi or action, movies are a medium of leisure and amusement for every individual ranging from those on streets to the high and mighty residing in the penthouses. Yes, such is the universal appeal of a movie. The greatest of all benefits of watching movies is that it entertains you irrespective of your social strata.

TOEFL

Here are 4 Type of TOEFL Test You Need to Understand. Equally Testing English, But Different Objectives

It seems to hear the term TOEFL is no stranger to the academics. Test of English as a Foreign Language is one of the most common tests to test English proficiency as a requirement to enter a renowned college. Not only that, TOEFL was also one of the requirements to enter the workforce. Some companies require applicants to attach their TOEFL certificates.
Apart from the importance of having a TOEFL certificate, there is something else related to the English proficiency test that you need to know. This is related to the type of TOEFL test you will be taking. Each test has different characteristics and will also be used for different purposes.
In order to maximize the score earned in order to qualify for a job, it would be nice if you know the following types of TOEFL test.

1.      PBT (Paper Based Test), is the most conventional TOEFL form.

The test system uses a paper sheet of questions and answers to be filled with a 2B pencil
PBT is one type of TOEFL that uses paper sheets containing questions, hints and answer options. The charging itself uses a 2B pencil instead of a ballpoint pen. This type of PBT is most commonly used, including in Indonesia. The material used in this PBT is about listening, structure and reading.

2.      If CBT (Computer Based Test), is a type of TOEFL test that uses computers in the process

Requires computer and software for its work via www.microsec.org
In this CBT, you do not need to use paper anymore like PBT type, but working directly on the computer. All questions are displayed on the screen using interactive software. The material tested is listening, structure, reading, and writing.

3.      As the name implies, IBT (Internet Based Test) uses the internet network to access and perform the TOEFL test

This test is the latest form that uses computers and the internet as a medium and is hosted by ETS (Educational Testing Service) as an institution holding a TOEFL license domiciled in the United States. Since it is held directly by ETS, it is international. This is why TOEFL IBT is better known as Official TOEFL ETS, because its implementation is done by ETS itself, or also referred to as NGT (Next Generation Toefl) because it has its implementation based on internet.

• Test materials tested are reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Material structure is not lost, but merged into 4 other materials.
• The tested questions are not only independent test or individual tests, but also integrated test or combination test.
• Combination test means that in one question there is more than one material. For example a paragraph (reading) followed by a person's explanation of the paragraph (listening).
• The duration of the test to be able to do all is 4 hours.
• Because it is held directly by ETS, the test schedule can not be flexible. The cost for one test is also quite high.
